I Should Have Been Paying More Attention

I spent a nice few hours trying to find a nonexistent vacuum leak and dismantling/testing various sensors in a vain attempt to bring this Pulsar's idle down to acceptable levels from a ridiculously high 1200 RPM. As it turns out, the car's brain was disagreeing with me as to what, exactly, the idle should be. Before the rebuild the same thing had been happening and I'd assumed the mechanic who worked on it last had raised the idle due to the engine's poor condition. Not so. Apparently they weren't paying attention either. In addition to the usual idle adjustment screw on the throttle body, some Nissans have this cute little thing (that also serves as a code reader for the engine management system) :

Even after swapping out the automatic transmission ECU and replacing it with one from a manual, I still managed to miss this completely. It's always the stupid little things that getcha.
