I picked up an old Axiom GPS module on ebay a couple of weeks ago for about 20$ with the intention of using the built in memory to log locations and spit them out as one large packet via sparkfun's transmitter/receiver pairs. Too bad it doesn't seem to work. Oh, the module itself will output NMEA strings at 4800 and even go into SiRF binary mode with the supplied program (conductor), but the thing has a real problem with the Axiom User Protocol part of it. That, unfortunately, is the only way to access the built in logging functions. It appears that the Axiom portion of this thing was either in a separate board (though this seems unlikely from the documentation) or disabled prior to sale. How irritating. So this is going to require quite a bit more in the way of additional hardware than I'd hoped.
There also seems to be a dearth of information of these things on the web, though in addition to the site provided by the ebay seller (http://www.allsurplus.net/Axiom/) there is this : http://www.laptop.net.pl/gps_swift/sirf%20toolkit/. In there you'll find one 17mb ZIP that contains everything in root and subdirectories. This includes the Conductor program (apparently the same version) and a few source files.
The active antenna arrived for this today from another ebay seller and seems to work decently for the price (about 20$ with shipping). In my house it can get a pretty good 2-d lock pretty constantly, but 3-d is flaky.
Anything further with this will have to wait until I get some RAM/flash for the pic to write to since it's internal memory (pic18f452) is nowhere near enough for more than a couple of positions.
